boiler barrel tube on the lathe for turning op. the flange for the smoke-box is turned before it goes on the 4th axis mill.
Ian has been making a "dummy" boiler from sheet metal so we can get a rolling chassis ready for the Dorset show.
mmm, top secret. not sure i can post a picture

Re: showmans boiler
the boiler plates arrived this week...
and we are already prepping them on the machine...
so with the plates now here, the boiler barrels have gone up on the 4th axis mill. it really is a tight fit !!!
i've had to make a fixture with little rollers to support the end of the tube...

Re: showmans boiler
had some good news on the boilers...
the boilers have to be inspected at various stages of manufacture by "them that know" !!! and until we get the OK on them we cant move on to the next stage. the good new is that the first stage of "tacking together" has been given the OK and we can now more on to some proper welding up of things

Re: showmans boiler
another sub assembly appeared today...
this may seem like slow progress but we are doing a batch of 40 of these at the moment.
should see something that looks like a finished boiler going together soon

Showmans boiler
Looking fantastic guys, really good on all fronts - boiler, Block and Kit 10.
As a matter of interest, does anyone know the weight of the boilers ?
cheers
Rick

Re: showmans boiler
im sure Steve has a facility in solid works that gives an approximate weight of any part, but i may have dreamt it.
im sure we can stick one on the scales if not.

Re: showmans boiler
Unless I'm remembering it wrong I seem to recall being told about 100kg for the Road Loco and 120kg for the Showmans.
Looking forward to it all arriving shortly... I have now caught up with everything outstanding, wheels all lined nameplates painted and polished. Nothing left to do but wait now....

Possible non delivery by couriers
Hi Craig
In case you do not send the boilers out by courier what are the dimensions of the showman boiler so I can start planning and reserving resources if they will not fit in the car.

Re: showmans boiler
Fitting it in the boot is one thing, getting it in and out is another problem!!
It will fit in my S-Max too and the access is not to bad, all flat and low floor, I get my wife-s large mobility scooer in reasonable easily. However, the tailgate would be in the way of a fork lift truck putting it in and would possibly not even allow access for my engine hoist recently purchased to assist with the "heavier" parts
Still look forward to the challenge, I will post some photos of our road loco - Blackbeard - at some point.

Re: showmans boiler
good progress on the boilers...
fire hole rings before wielding into the boilers...
finished boilers waiting for machining...
and the first boiler has been machined mark has spent the last few days making all the jigs and fixtures and slowly working his way through the machining of the first one. once the first one is out of the way the rest will follow thick and fast
mark fitting the reference plate to the boiler, this basically sits where the cylinder will sit and gives the correct machining width of the finished boiler mounting lugs and a reference point to work from to get the correct positions of the mounting holes...
