Re: genral advice
Hi Geoff,
although they do get warm, being close to the boiler, i opted to use normal (Craftmaster) paint for the hornplates with no ill effects so far (5 seasons of steaming).
Only the 2x6 bolts that connect the hornplates to the boiler need some attention as - especially during the first few steamings - they tend to loosen up due to the paint at the contact point to the boiler getting soft, reducing the clamping force of the bolts. Just check and retighten as needed.
Hope that helps

Re: genral advice
I'd agree with Elwood-59 that we painted the horn plates on our Foden with Craftmaster Engine Enamel and haven't had any problems with it peeling but have had the bolts holding them repeatedly work loose during the first year of steaming, while I still check them every steaming I've had very little movement subsequently..
