Manhole Finisher
Here are the instructions for fitting the manhole finisher:
Seriously - has anyone ever managed to put this theory into practice ?? To start with, the copper is not soft - it has been hardened by being whacked into shape… and as for being able to be “gently” knocked in order to bend the lip under - impossible - it just could not be done like that.
So I had to think of a plan B, and what I did was to cut the lip like this……
….and then attach the finisher while the cladding was off the boiler…..
….and it fits quite nicely…

Hi Milford
I and many other builders have successfully fitted the manhole surround. It just takes care and attention. Yes copper work hardens but when I for one was doing my fitting I just heated the copper with a hobby gas torch to soften it and carried on. The technique needed is simple and easily researched online.

Re: Manhole Finisher
Thanks very much Lynn - I have some experience of metalwork and annealing copper, but my concern was the temperature required would likely discolour the top surface due to conduction from the lip - so I decided on my Plan B
As always, my intention with posts is to help builders with observations and suggestions that can be of help - and in this instance, my suggestion would be to maybe make the instructions more comprehensive and mention that the copper will be work-hard and potentially require annealing in order that the “gentle” application of the hammer will be sufficient.
