Glass guages Empty Glass guages

Post  Lufccrowther on Sat 28 Mar 2020, 5:20 pm

Hi there.
I'm having a bit of trouble with the glass guages at the moment.
They leak water and steam, they are still usable but I would like them to seal properly.
I've used the seals STW supply, 'O' rings and live steam model seals aswell but none want seal up. when I go and nip them up the glass breaks. I've checked the alignment and that also seams fine.
Any help or tips will be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Luke Crowther

Mine are just finger tight certainly didnt use any spanners. One of mine I replaced with a small o-ring a couple of seasons ago and its been fine since.

I ended up buying high temperature O rings and just do them up two finger tight. They dribble a bit on a hydraulic test but totally dry when in steam. Ordinary O rings will get you through a season but they go hard & brittle with the heat & eventually fail. The lining up of the top & bottom of the gauge glass is probably the most critical part of the whole build. I use an aluminium bar which is a sliding fit, any error will cause problems, also you don't want too much glass going into the fitting top & bottom, about 4mm is enough as the O ring is doing all the work sealing anyway.

The other thing to look for is horn plate tightness, we had this issue on about the third run with our SCC.
