Water pump knocking noise
Hi all new to this group so sorry if this is a daft question
8 months ago I bought a model works 4” Burrell that was on display as an ornament it was first fired in 2016 and has been fired 35 times 20 by myself as records are kept.
The time before last while running the engine just stopped suddenly and I found out that it was the water pump
Inside it was what looked like a bush possibility 15mm in diameter and 15mm long ( looked like a piece of copper tube)
Upon removing it the engine run again without any problems and the water pump seems to be working ok.
Any ideas what this (bush) is or did
Thanks

Re: Water pump knocking noise
Was this mystery bush on the gland side of the pump piston or was it on the wet side.

Re: Water pump knocking noise
It was at the end off the ram it was stopping the flywheel doing a full revolution
It was partially crushed by the ram can find it and post a photo when I get back if that helps
Thanks

Re: Water pump knocking noise
Theres a small bearing bush on the end of pump where the rod connects to piston, the modelworks ones had a habit of wearing quite quickly as they were soft oilite ones from memory. Mine developed quite a lot of wear but I replaced it with a brass one before it got too bad but I dont think it would have completely let go like that.
Although the bush you describe sound much bigger than that one.

Re: Water pump knocking noise
Yeh I’ve got a bit of wear on the connection rod to the piston this bush I found was at the end of the rod loose as in the piston was hitting it on full stroke
I took the pump of the horn plate removed the piston which was still attached to the rod and there it was in the end of the pump body crushed ???
Strange isn’t it

Re: Water pump knocking noise
I seem to remember this as a fault with an early batch of water pumps. They were made from a series of parts silver soldered together. Some had leaks from various joints and some had this part you described come loose internally. The design was changed to a solid casting and that pretty much cured the problems. If it was mine I would buy a new pump from STW as its a fairly crucial element on a steam engine.
The other problem with the early ones was the eccentric had too much throw and when running fast the clack couldn't keep up with the flow and a hammer noise would come from the pump. The cure was a reduced throw eccentric with a spacer block to keep the piston at the bottom of the cylinder. From memory the original throw was 18mm and the new one was 12mm. Might be worth checking what you have and updating to the new one if it's not already been fitted.

Re: Water pump knocking noise
Thanks steve
Appreciate the advice I’ll give will a call at STW and order a new pump

Re: Water pump knocking noise
Did you get an answer on the throw of the eccentric? I have about a 20mm throw on mine, I get a terrible knock from my pump, not helped because the hole that the top ball sits in is not concentric to the chamber and the ball has hammered the hell out of its seat. I would like to rectify it.

Looks like you have an early version of the eccentric, I made my own up to prove the point at the time. Don't forget the packer on the piston rod so the piston goes to the bottom of the pump, otherwise it will struggle to pick up when empty.

Did you go for a 12mm throw Steve?

Re: Water pump knocking noise
From memory the original throw was 18mm and I reduced this down to 12mm and made a 6mm spacer to extend the piston rod. With the reduced throw there was no knocking even at high(ish) revs and it still put plenty of water in when needed.

Thank you. I will have a look at altering it
