Weighshaft taper pin
Hi, I have had a failure of the taper pin connecting the left hand lever to the weighshaft.
It snapped at either side of the shaft such that the lever arm could rotate.
Has anybody else seen this?
Any thoughts on preventative measures please.

Re: Weighshaft taper pin
You could always drill and tap a small grub screw underneath out of sight and lock it up once you put the new taper pin in

I had the same problem just 3 weeks ago just before the boiler inspector was due a visit.Schteamer wrote:Hi, I have had a failure of the taper pin connecting the left hand lever to the weighshaft.

I replaced the pin with an imperial equivelant. just had to put a taper reamer in first.
I decided not to toughen the pin any further than designe because the pin broke for a reason! so if I make it tuffer what will break next.
As yet I havent descovered the reason for the breakage, but when I do I will first repair then let you in in my findings.
The reversing lever works smoothley with the crank in any position and I have taken the LP chest cover off at full steam and found no issues so at the moment I am at a loss.
Just to add intregue to the issue I have had several sucsefull steaming since the breakage and had no problems.

Re: Weighshaft taper pin
Thanks Simon, interesting to learn it isn't just me.
I was at a pub about 5 miles from home when i discovered it and had to do a fix on the fly by stealing one of the pins from the handbrake collars.
After I replaced it, it ran fine for the rest of the day.
I wonder if it just fatigues due to vibration.
It maybe just a maintenance item that needs replacing once per year as a preventative measure. I can't see any evidence that there has been an event that caused a catastrophic failure.

I don't think it's fatigue, Tim & I have done 250 odd miles on Frederick and that's not caused a problem. We have had a few bits drop off but usually 'Frederick' catches them somewhere so we can put them back on later!
