Water pump
Hi all, having problems with water pump. Can't seem to get to pump. I have taken the clack off and removed the ball bearing, then poured water in from that end and turned the flywheel. Water comes out till the pipe is empty and then nothing. I have also taken the top of the pump off and poured water in there too and at same time poured water in clack. all to no avail.
Anyone got and ideas or advise?
Charlie

Re: Water pump
Hi
Check the "end float" on the bypass spindle. There has been a couple where the nut holding the spindle in being a bit long so not seating down. So when water pressure exists it pushes the spindle out the valve by a couple mm. This being enough to allow the water to bypass completely.
Gently file the nut down a bit to allow it to nip up better on the spindle so there is just a very little bit of play.

Re: Water pump
Hi Lynn,
When you say "end float", do you mean the valve on end of pump that you switch from bypass to let water pump into engine? And by play, do you mean on the valve end, should you be able to pull spindle and it to move in and out slightly?

Re: Water pump
Sorry
Yes the bypass valve spindle. It can be pulled in and out of the valve hole when the retaining nut is bottomed out on the thread. There should be very little play, a fraction of a mm.

Re: Water pump
Hi Lynn,
Have tried what you suggested and still no joy. I have no end float on spindle. There is a "o" ring on spindle which sits insde of housing, is there meant to be any packing around the spindle inside the nut? I can see what is meant to keep the spindle in place as the inside of the nut is flat and doesn't touch the "o" ring. Hope that makes sense to you, hard to describe it.
Any other ideas?
Charlie
P.S. I guess I can make the pump work just by turning the flywheel by hand?

Re: Water pump
Hi
No packing around the nut as the O-ring does the sealing.
Yes you can test by spinning the flywheel.
It is a very simple design. 2 ball valves and a gate valve.
Are you getting a good seal around the piston.
Silly question, but it has happened before, is the piston in the correct way?
Check the valve seats are clean and true.
Cover the ports and pull the piston out. You should hear a "pop"

Re: Water pump
Hi Lynn,
I have only just put the water pump back on, I have repacked it and all seems fine, when I took it apart I had a pop when removing the piston from the housing. To the best of my ability, I believe the piston is in correctly.
The valve seats you are talking about are where? Are they where the ball bearing sits on the top of water pump?

Re: Water pump
Hi
Yes where the balls sit.
If still no joy. You can send the pump back to STW for Ian to have a look at it.

Re: Water pump
Hi Lynn,
Just thought I'd let you know that my water pump is working now. Not sure what I done, but its working.
I was adjusting my big end and turning the flywheel and the pump started working.
Thanks for your help.
