I used a number of times on the engine primarily on the spokes. Running up and down to get perfect centred lines.
Tape also has its place. Finesse and the pre-spaced lining tapes.

Thank you Lynn, from what I understand perfect for spokes and flywheel, bit more tricky perhaps for the engine, where as tape is easier?

Completely agree with Lynn there, you need a bugler for the wheels & flywheel (really quick & easy) & tape for everything else. The tape is a fiddle applying, you need a scalpel & and pair of needle point tweezers, good eyesight & patience. Apply two coats of paint about 30 - 40 minutes apart & peel the tape off immediately after the second coat then the wet edge drops so it doesn't feel sharp to the touch. A couple of coats of clear lacquer and the jobs a goodun.
With the beuglar plan ahead and don't do too much in one go. It pays to start & stop on a piece of masking tape, if it goes wrong you can wash it off with white spirit however the wheel leaves little ridge lines even after washing off so be careful. If you only do one colour at a time, if it's good let it dry & the next day do another colour/line. The Beuglar pen is chrome & I find quite slippery especially when concentrating hard to get it right. I always tear off a couple of bits of paper masking tape & stick them down each side so it's easy to grip. Have fun of a biscuit time first!

Thanks Steve.
when you say couple of coats of lacquer, do you mean just on the pinstripes or the whole of the panel that is being lined, wasn't planning on varnish or lacquer, but if I must

The whole panel, when they are in steam they are very good at covering themselves in oil & soot. You will be constantly wiping the paintwork with an oily rag & a couple of clear coats just protects the lines. I've seen several engines that had a lovely detailed finish but after a couple of years the paint has been rubbed away by constant cleaning. Easier to do a couple of clear coats now than a full repaint a couple of years down the line! Also the lacquer holds its shine longer than just paint alone.

The added benefit of clear coat is you cut back the top coat with wet'n'dry 1200 before applying the clear. so it has something to key too. in doing this you also get a perfectly smooth finish as any imperfections/brush marks/runs are sanded flat.
