Re: The surrey
Looks great! Can you tell us what and where you got your headlamp and how you mounted it?

head lamp
I purchased the head lamp on e bay. then converted the lamp part to a modern high low beam bulb. the mounting of the lamp uses the headlight brackets that came with the light. and 1/2" bars bent and mounted the the spring upper plate. I will be shooting a you tube video on the car with detail and will post the link here.

Re: The surrey
Hi jjtjr,
Could you show in more detail your speedometer set up. Specifically what gearing ratios were etc. to make it accurate.
Thanks,
Grier

speedo setup

You have a 7.875 diameter blank. You wish to use a 7 diametrical pitch cutter. You want to cut 54 teeth on one gear and 40 on another. You want to have a gear ratio of 1.375.
54 teeth divided by 40 gives a ratio of 1.35 ?
52 teeth and 38 teeth, which gives a ratio of 1.3684. Which is closer to desired ratio.
Gear blank size for 52 teeth 7 pitch is 7.7142
Pitch diameter is 7.4285
Cutting depth is .3081
Gear blank size for 38 teeth 7 pitch is 5.7142
Pitch diameter is 5.4285
Cutting depth is .3081
Center to center distance should be about 6.4464 for the two gears.

Re: The surrey
SO if given a Model 26 with the 2.5 to 1 ratio that requires 1009 revolutions to the speedometer to equal one mile, and your above gear ratio of 1.375 then the wheel revolutions per mile would be 733.82. This translates into a wheel diameter of approximately 27.5 inches. Is this correct? I ask because I'm just waiting patiently for the next batch of Lykamobiles and don't have a wheel to measure.

speedo
I just measured my tires, yes the statement you made is correct the diameter is 27" loaded with the weight of car on them, A half inch of deflection is about right. Which gives you a diameter of about 27.5 give or take a little. I made the speedo setup in 2011 so I had to look for my old calculations.

The cutter was dull after a few teeth.
I then made a new disc from cast iron which was much easier to machine. This is the steps that I followed.

The final result. It was a slow go without a DRO on my miller. I have one now on the miller so Its faster to do any work.

I use the speedo all the time when I drive the car. Don't want to get any speeding tickets. Ha. Ha.
I used an involute cutter you can also hob the gear.
