Hi tony due to being to busy at work and having lots of problems with putting the engine together(me not very brainy if I should say😃), I've sent the engine to Lynn for them to work on which I appreciate loads and I no it wil get done properly, I no if it was to stil be here it would never get finished which would be a shame, so hopefully there wil be lots of pictures of the problems I've made or what Lynn is working on so it can make the forum exciting for a bit lol 😃

Yes. Coming apart quickly. Hope to get on with main bearings and eccentrics tomorrow.

When you got things plated you forgot to make sure the bushes were blanked off or greased up to stop them being plated.

The little end bushes might be keput. The cross pins were forced through the bearings due to the plating. But I will try and recover them or get new ones to press in.

Big end bearings are over tight on the saddle straps as they were not let out to account for the added plate thickness. Easily solved. That's why the jack posts would not go in very far.

Cross head slide bars need shimmed up a bit to remove play. Easily solved.

Varous bearing oil holes need creating. Most are easily solved. Only difficult ones are the 2nd shaft due to space constraints.

Eccentric reach rods were on, well, randomly would be best description. Most of the bending induced has relaxed out so looking good there. Easily solved.

Valve slide on the LP side was too tight on the rod so would not make correct contact. Solved. Need to replace the brass slot head screws with the steel bolts, Steam Traction World modification.

Valve rod collet modification, parts requested from Steam Traction World. Easily solved.

Steam head pipe work loose and no thread seal applied. Easily solved now the crank is out.

Steam injector pipe work too loose and not water or steam tight. Easily solved.

Loose nuts, bolts and missing locking nuts prevalent all over. Severe lack of thread lock. Easily solved.

Brackets for the drain cock pipe work not installed behind cleading. So will need to take belly tank off and forward cleading. Easily solved.

Steering chain bar too tight requiring two handed steering. Will shim bearings when belly tank is off.

Gear change levers pivot points plated through making pivots and bushes over tight. Easily solved.

Think that is enough for day 1.

No problem Mike

Been working on the eccentrics today. Got 3 of them swinging nicely. One is being a right pain.

More filing and honing

Eccentrics are all good now. 6 hours of work later. One needs a very thin shim at one end for good smooth function. So not worried about them anymore.

Reduced the flywheel crank bearing to make it fit again

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 F1B61DEF-0F9E-46F9-A0C4-80D8A85FE0D9_zpswiagrdla

Not sure on the little ends. I have removed all the visible plating but unsure if the sub structure of the bush is clogged up. At least the bearing now rotates smoothly.

Great pictures lynnr!!!! Its fantastic to see someone building again. Please keep them coming.

The oil holes that needed to be drilled is that something you have to do while building the kits? Or was it just missed by STW. Not that its a big deal just wondering.

For the eccentrics are you using time saver to lap them in and turning them by hand?

All the best

Hi

The bushes for the valve rods partially occlude the oil holes. The 2nd shaft also partially occlude the hole. I drill in once the bushes are set just to make sure oil gets to the face. On the 2nd shaft it has now created an oil bath so the shaft is protected the whole length.

Yes I am using Timesaver. 40, 60, 80, 120

Took more bits of this morning. But it was to make putting the mechanical water pump on easier.

Flywheel brake and steering removed.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 BC58D032-711D-432D-A960-4DECA391196D_zpsr6qjwyln

Make sure the hole in the end of the water pump piston has plenty instant gasket. Otherwise it WILL leak past.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 3F0C45D1-D557-4EDF-B183-17FE553CB81D_zpsfhf1ozbm

Fitted the steam head while waiting for the instant gasket to set off a bit.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 A54FC591-2E60-4449-B168-AB66A28758A2_zpsblblsvkq

3 turns of packing installed. Make sure they are cut as individual and have the cuts opposite. This makes them seat better and no voids.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 54611F03-2A8B-4E91-A598-AC8A32E6527A_zpscvveu5bq

Make sure you mark the bypass valve spindle for "water flow". Makes life easier later.

Piston put through the backhead.

Toes getting cold in the -8 so off in for lunch. Working boots and double socks needed for next session.

It warmed up to -7 then dropped to -10 at 1530

More work done on the water pump. Eccentric grinding and lapping.

Trial fit of the water pump
One pipe will need modification as too long. Will not even work by changing the bends.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 AFC0D37F-9695-4ACE-BA36-684B672E3341_zpswbys2lk0

This is why it is best to do the water pump without the crank.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 70EE2148-BB1A-4A68-B7DA-112798BAB808_zpsfln7rnpf

2nd shaft oil hole. 30 minutes to remove the paint in the threads. Adapter now fitted.

Sorry bout the smudge on the phone camera lens.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 C784E998-CE11-4236-B9F5-A2CBA836EF77_zpsvoyk8vpa

Here we go again! Bit easier for getting the tap in as through hole.
Also turn one of the bolts round as the protruding threads foul the water pump ram.

Hi All

This mornings progress. Does not look a lot but all fiddly bits. So much easier to do without waterpump and expansion link in the way.

LH 2nd shaft oil pot installed.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 A818A242-30D5-4919-86D7-9F597A069462_zpsd6drsj1s

RH 2nd shaft oil pot modified, lowered and installed.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 F51CDD9D-6F1F-406A-AB5F-7CF0567CD192_zpszkw1td20

Water pump installed to test. Runs smooth but slightly tight which should loosen out.
Pressure gauge installed but only loosely tightened as will come off during cold inspection for testing.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 D85BDF88-BFB3-4DC5-80CE-B31DDD7165BA_zpstt54vcim

Water pump eccentric. Remember to loctite the retaining bolt as it is very very difficult and hot to fish it out and put it back on when the engine is in steam. Been there.

Mikes Road loco - Page 3 50E3FF86-2DA7-4EB7-84EC-74F2166D6F82_zpso7wri5ow

Not painted the rod or that as it is low down in the crank pit and will turn a shade of black quickly enough.

Regulator modification kit requested from Steam Traction World.

So good progress had this morning. There is other sub assemblies being done when I am raking through the parts box for something else. Spot a part and think. AH get that fitted together now. Save some time later.

Hope you all are enjoying the fast track build.
