Re: Mikes Road loco
I had identical issues with two of mine.
I popped down the local car factors and bought a lapping kit for valve ports. cost £4.
it comes with two pots of grinding paste fine and coarse.
They are very abrasive but I found if i mixed some with some engine oil and twisted the eccentric inside the bands they loosened very quickly and slide together.
As soon as the fit together you can use a finer compound if you wish. Timesaver is good but expensive and you don't need to wash it off after you have used it.
The compounds I have used you will need to wash the eccentric in a tub of spirit after to get rid of all the grit.

Re: Mikes Road loco
Good thing about the timesaver is it doesnt embed in the metal and you have a wider choice of coarse right down to very fine but yes it is expensive.
Good idea to ring STW and see what they say though.

Re: Mikes Road loco
I had a similar problem and Steve sent me down a small amount of timesaver. It is not as quick as the name suggests but does the job and gives a nice grey finish.

Re: Mikes Road loco
I know it sounds really obvious, but have you de bured all the contacting edges, it makes a BIG difference how things fit together!! The number of times I thought something wasn't right, but when carefully "cleaned up" it actually did fit.. Particularly the eccentrics!!!.... Your photo suggests more than "grinding paste" required!!

Re: Mikes Road loco
I agree with Tony, a good debur normally has them a lot closer then the lapping compound worked a treat on the valve gear eccentrics. IT is time consuming rather than time saving but keeps you out of mischief for a few hours doing them all. Makes you sweat to so a good winter job.

Re: Mikes Road loco
Hi Mike, very impressed. How did you do the lining? Did you use stencils, tape or freehand?

Re: Mikes Road loco
Thank u for the comments I used tape for the lining, I hav 2 kits left to get and hopefully they wil b here soon, I've just brought a trailer for the girl so I'm hopeing to take her out just to go on show over the next month, there's 1 thing I need to sort before that and that's I need some spacers for the back axle to bring the wheels out so they don't rub the wheels, wil stw provide them? I can't wait to steam her but I no I wil hav lots of leaks and teething problems,

Turning over
It should turn over reasonably easily, having said that if you compare it to an engine that is run in it will probably feel quite stiff! The main thing is you don't want bearings getting hot through being too tight as that can ruin them. Having everything a little loose & then tighten/shim it all up to get rid of any knocks is fine. For the first few hours I would just have it ticking over to settle everything in so you can focus on any minor steam leaks.
It's great feeling to see it come alive with a fire for the first time! .............................. even if everything isn't perfect.

Hi Mike
Crystal has bunched up in her bedroom to make space for your engine coming to visit. I will be keeping an eye on them to make sure there is no mamods appearing down the line.

If, however, they should get jiggy jiggy when you're not looking, I'm sure we can find homes for the little ones!
