Etchings for your Engines
Hi everyone,
I do apologise for posting this in all the forums but I dont seem to be bale to post in the forsal section of this site as it's locked. This is also with the blessing of Steve and Dean to do this and post on here.
I've set myself up to start producing etchings for steam Traction Engines and locomotives on a fairly large scale production. It's not my full time work but I have everything needed to etch plates up to around an A4 piece of paper in size...
I'm a builder of a 2" scale Burrell from STW and wanted a plate for fitting to the rear of the horn stretcher. This plate says " CLEAN OUT BOILER EVERY SEVEN DAYS” I’ve seen a few different ones on full size Engines and they sometimes say 14 days instead of seven.
I decided to go with seven as I had seen it on model Burrell’s before.
I'm also doing my own names plates and other plates for people at my local club, consisting of shed plates, smoke box number plates, cab plates and name plates.
I have a small batch of Burrell Boiler wash plates (Pictures below) ready to etch if anyone would like one?
I won’t etch them until I know there is interest in them as I don’t want to waste brass and time.
The cost for a fully finished plate is £10 plus the postage. This is etch primered and then sprayed the colour you want it. (Normally either red or black) Please PM me if you are interested in one and I will get the batch etched up and sent out to people. I will need to know what colour you would like it painting.
I will be etching the name plates for my 2" Burrell tonight so I will post the results once completed.
The parts that I will be making are:
Boiler washout plates for 2" or 4" Burrell’s (I’m not sure if they are supplied with the 4")
Name plates for 2" Burrell and 4" Burrell to your name and size and colour requirements.
Licence plates for adding a small plate to your road going vehicle. Number etched either outwards or inwards.
Maker’s plates If you would like your name placed on your engine stating the year of manufacture and your name.
Locomotive Plates, Shed Plates, smoke box numbers and cab numbers. Fully researched and original artwork used.
Anything else that can be etched from Brass, Copper, Steal, Aluminium, or Zink.
I can't give you definite prices on how much the plates will cost as it'll go on what you want, artwork needed and the size etc. I can confirm that it will defiantly be allot cheaper than you will find anywhere else on the web and just as good quality. You can either get the basic etched and unfinished plate so you can trim and paint or a fully trimmed and painted plate.
I hope you like what you see... the plate has not been attached to my Burrell as yet so the picture only shows its scale on the 2" and the final look of the plate. This is a very small plate and the letters are around 3mm in height.
I’ll keep updating this with more pictures of the plates I make.
The plate finished, painted and placed on the loco for scale... There has been some slight undercutting of the letters on the plate below due to it's small size and it being in the etch too long. If you order a plate the letters will be allot crisper.

Re: Etchings for your Engines
Ha Ha, yes I apologise for posting in all the threads but you never know some people might not venture into other model threads.
I'll need to speak with Steve and Dean about getting a thread setup in the forsale section of the site. I like updating you guys and gals with progress of the plates though..
here is some more but you've probably allready seen it!!
Cut and painted nameplates for my 2" Burrell last night. they have not had the final polish as i didnt have time.
Not a great picture but you get the idea.. I'm very pleased with the way they have come out.
I'll now get on with the orders I have. I'll post up pictures of what I make for you all to see.
Thanks
Jo

Etchings
Hi
Can you etch 4" scale number plates in aluminium as that is quite a hard product to track down now and how much would they be?
Regards
Steve

Hello Jo,
I would be interested in both name and number plates for a 4" model. Can you send me a PM with what you need and the price.
Thanks,

Re: Etchings for your Engines
Sorry guys i've only just seen these posts.
Steve....Yes I can do number plates, I dont have any aluminium but i can get some. you could etch in brass and I could paint the letters white but it depends how you want it to look? I'm guessing your meaning the black and white road registration plates? PM with your details. ruff size needed etc or I can work out a size for the 4" scale engine.
Brian... can you send me a PM with the name your after for your 4" plate and i'll get back to you with a price.
The other 4" plates i'm doing are 5" and 1/8 long by just under 1 inch high and they are sold at £50 plus the postage. I have two orders for 4" plates and one for 2" plates.
Registration plates will probably be around £20-£25 each depending on how you want them. I have Brass on order for the 4" plates or i'll need to order some aluminium if you want then in aluminium. I can make the letters raised or sunk in the plate.
If your name is shorter then it'll be cheaper.
Thanks guys. speak soon.

Number plates
Great that you can do them, for the period I would need the numbers & letters raised with a borderless black background. Size would be one third of full size. However until I finish the engine I wont know what the registration will be! so it wont be for a few months yet

I have a fair amount of orders for name plates, makers plates and wash out plates. I'm busy doing the artwork for the said plates and I have recieved new stock of 3mm and 16 gauge brass.
if you order anything form me then i'm affraid it could take up to 3 weeks for the plates to get to you..
I'll post up the plates I'm making for people so you can all see the progress.
Thanks everyone.
Jo.

Re: Etchings for your Engines
Hi,
The normal etching depth for the 4" plates is around 1/64 or slightly over that, It will never be as deep as a cast plate as the etch starts to undercut into the letters and causes all sorts of problems..
I have to leave them for around 4 hours in the etch tank to get the depth shown above.
Thanks.

name plates
Hi Jo,
Would it be possible to make the space at the end of the lettering slightly larger, to allow more room for fixing screws?
Regards

Re: Etchings for your Engines
Hi Tony,
There is a good 3/16 each side of the words CLEAN and BOILER for screws,The plates are 2" long by 9/16" high so are bigger than they actually look in the picture.

Re: Etchings for your Engines
Just a little note to people that have ordered plates from me.
I'm running behind a little just now, I've been decorating 4 rooms in my house, laying wood floor and painting them in time for xmas family visits, this combined with my work every day has seen the etching go down to a "when I get the chance" situation. I am sorry for the delay. I have had chence to get plates that I have etched finished up and painted. if i've not sent you any artwork to proof then I've not got round to your plates yet.
I hope to get a final patch for 2011 sent out to Mal, Tony and Lillyjack before xmas.
I'll update with pictures on here of the plates before sending them out.
thanks everyone. I do hope you all have a very happy xmas and great new year..
