This morning we put in the leaf springs and fitted the wheels to the Axel, certainly is taller than I had imagined. It took 3 of us to set this up for the shot and take it apart again, it’s quite heavy so for those following behind please be careful if you do the same and ensure there is plenty of hands to help!!

Looks superb................ Is it my imagination? .......... Your chimney looks longer than mine!!! Is the "copper top" sitting ontop of the funnel?

We do have some sun today, but it's also very windy with strong gusts Just come back in from the garden where we have just had a fence post go taking two panels with it. That's a job for tomorrow if the wind drops.

Afternoon Tony, thanks for comments. Yes at the moment I have not fitted the copper top so have gained a few inches extra height. Once polished I'll get it fitted, but last time I tried fitting it I ended up taking off all the paint on the top section of the chimney so will be trying it a different way next time.

Edit ...... I've also not yet bolted the chimney to the smoke box so it's easier to handle and store, and just incase it needs to be removed later in the build to make assess easier.

Keep the chimney off. When it comes to fitting the smokebox to the boiler you will find it easier without. Also I left mine without the wheels and stood the smokebox in the corner upside down so it sat on the chimney ring.,

Thanks Kev, I think we are on to kit 17 next for the belly tank which we are looking forward to.

I have just done my belly tank, if it goes together anything like mine you have nothing to fear.
It was a pleasure to put together,just take your time and get it all lined up and all should be well.

I even enjoyed all those riv bolts ,which was good cos theres lots of em!!

Call came in today from Isabel and belly tank on its way .....great news as not much been done on the build for a while and I've started to get withdrawal symptoms.

Not a great fan of those tiny rivets having just done the bowser over Christmas, but this time it's only going together once....or that's the plan.

Lynn, did you find there were any nuts worth getting welded for ease like on the bowser tank?

If you are doing the bolts so the nut is on the outside it would be worth welding as You will not need to remove the end covers to take the support brackets off. If the nuts are inside then it is not so easy as the weld point is the fillet pieces and they could move. I did not do mine as I had not thought of it at that point. Wish I had.

BUT!

Now you should have the correct brackets there is no reason to need to remove the brackets as once your tank is fitted that should be it.
Remember do not fit the pipe elbow or the inspection cover on the toolbox side as you will need to fit the balance pipe and seal the join once you have Kit 26.

Forgot to also say. Check the gap between the brackets to the hornplates before sealing everything up. I had to release my brackets and jack them out a touch to allow fitting to the hornplates.

Ok thanks Lynn thats a very good point as ever. I'll leave the sealing up till later In the build then as I am out of sequence with kits at the moment.

I better put my belly tank building experience on the forum this weekend just to add my two peneth to it. I built it slightly different to the instructions and did some preparation to the front and back panels that helped assembly no end.

No not yet Brian, picked it up on the way in to the office yesterday. Have unpacked and Tash and I are about to check the contents and make a start.

I know this sounds strange, but if anyone is by their engine with a camera I would be very grateful if the could take a photo of the hinge arrangement on the tool box. Have tried all ways but the holes won't line up and I can't get them to fit.

Edit....ignore that just looked at the solidworks 3d model and all became clear, should have gone there first

Yep that was the solution, obvious when I looked at the 3d. Tash has it all together now and drilled the holes for the plate.

Hey Rob

How much of the build is Tash, your apprentice doing or are you the apprentice??

We are both the apprentice I recon.

So far she has helped with nickel plating, final assembled the front wheels and Helped with one of the rear wheels, fitted the smoke box door and provided additional hands where needed, the tool box though (including the painting) is her own little project.

Nice that you (Tash) are getting hands on. Just need some pictures of the parts being done.
