Smoke Box Door Empty Smoke Box Door

Having just riveted my smokebox door hinge on, the door is quite some way off of central to the smokebox door ring. Is this normal?

Tried loosening off the hinge lugs and adjusting but makes little difference. Am I missing something here, or are the doors slightly to one side on all 2''s

Also I have now realized that I need to file the hinge to get the large name ring to fit. Doh. So removed the rivets and will now need to wait for some new ones in the post that I have just ordered.

Whilst on the subject of fasteners, what should I be stocking up on ahead of time for the inevitable errors of judgment that mean I destroyed the provided fasteners and for which no spares are provided?

Pic attached but not sure if it really shows the positional error well

Also is it correct to paint the inside of the smoke box?

Looks to me like the holes in the door for the rivets are in. Maybe worth speaking to STW and getting a replacement door. That I would have thought would mean you wouldn't have to file the hinge to fit the name ring. I didn't have to on mine.

Regarding what fasteners to keep stocks of. You get through loads of M3 bolts and nuts. Almost everything seems to be fixed with them.

I didn't bother painting inside the smokebox as I thought it would just get burned off anyway.

Thanks, Ian. I have have had to file a half-moon into the leading edge of the hinge in order for the name ring to fit

Will continue on for the time being and see how it all looks when put together.

I will paint the inside of the firebox I think. I realize it will most likely be burned off, but as it will be a considerable time until it is in steam and I am working in a dampish cellar, it will keep the rust at bay Very Happy
