2" Burrell Governors
Hi All.
Lilyjack asked for an explanation about our 2" Burrell Governor.
The purpose of a governor on full size engine is to maintain the speed of the engine regardless (within limits) of the load. Primarily this would have been when powering a circular saw or threshing drum.
They are notoriously difficult to get to fully operate in miniature even in 4" scale. They can easily be made to look as though they work, i.e. they spin round, as ours will, but to get them to control the engines speed is not so easy.
The problem is that you can’t scale nature. The balls that provide the centrifugal force which control the lift of the valve are only 1/216th of the mass of the full size. Our 2" Burrell is 1/6th in length, 1/6th in width and 1/6th in height.
A brief explanation of how the Governor should work would probably be in order. The regulator is opened to control the desired speed of the engine. As the ball weights of the Governor spin round, centrifugal force moves the balls apart. As a consequence of this, the top of the Governor is moved down changing the position of the valve. The Governor valve restricts the amount of steam that can pass to the cylinder steam chest so as the Governor valve is forced down a greater restriction is created. The speed of the engine is reduced, the balls move closer together which lifts the Governor valve and the speed of the engine increases. The worm and wheel adjustment on the side of the Governor provides an adjustable resistance to the down movement of the valve and also provides a return force to the Governor valve.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Steve

Hi Not so big now Al, and Bungle
My balls might be small but I've got three of them. And I can spin them around and around at about 200 rpm. Bet you can't do that.
