'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
So today I got the call to say our first kit is on its way and will be delivered tomorrow! I think my son is struggling to understand it's going to be a few years before he'll be able to drive it though (he's only three so understandable)! We'll be posting loads of pics and updates as this is our first big build and will be a great resource for my boys to look back on when it's finsished.

Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
The first kit is here! All parts checked off and looking good. A busy work week means it'll be a week before I get a chance to make a start. Hopefully the pics upload and there will be more to follow over the next month. I've also compared the size to my D R Mercer Roller - there's quite a difference!

Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
I've managed to spend some time working on the first kit and it's going together pretty well, a couple of bits have taken some persuasion and the holes in the bottom inspection plate look a little bit out. My junior engineer is loving helping!

Brilliant - a true model engineer - if in doubt, hit it with a hammer!
Great that he is involved - lucky lad.

Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
A great start, and those little fingers will be very valuable. I've not built my tender yet, job for tomorrow night I think. POR15 has arrived so I can crack on. No modifications to this kit for me this time, although I may change the try cocks again.
I also need to order my paint, and for the showman's canopy while I am at it.
Keep up the good work, great to see another build on the forum.

Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
Progress has been very slow but finally found some time this morning to seal the tender with the POR 15, after masking up all the holes in went the gloop and lots of turning it seems to have covered everywhere, only time will tell if it's done its job properly!

I will be interested to see how this goes for you. Like the access to seal the tender before putting the lid on.

All looks ok but leaving it to dry properly for a few days before putting the top on! A visit to Craftmaster and we've confirmed colour and got everything we need to make a start!

Primer and undercoat finished, two coats of Post Office Red Coach enamel to go and then time for the outside. Hornplates and first roll arrive on Wednesday so need to crack on!

Are you leaving your tender beading square?

Thanks Lynn! I was going to leave as is and just paint, should I do something else?
Got the front roll and hornplates today and somewhat daunted by all the work. First question is what is 'high grade retainer' to secure the rivets into the hornplates?

Hi grade = retaining grade thread lock used for spoke bolts etc. Thinks that will not need to be opened again.
Bearing grade used for threads that might have to be undone.
The beading should have a half round look to it. At least break the edges as paint does not stick well to sharp edges.

Would loctite 638 be suitable? It seems from their website it would do the job!

Personally I wouldn't use it,I found that a rapid epoxy worked well, just don't mix to much at once.
I drilled all if the larger holes out a little and used a countersink bit to give a little more area for the adhesive to grab, the small rivets didn't seem to be a problem, just try dry fitting before you glue as I noticed a couple of the rivets were a bit tight.
If you PM me your number i can send you a couple of pictures when I get home.

Was also going to leave mine square, the showman's and RL had a D shaped beading supplied, but we had to shape it around the access to the footplate. Was a right pain. I've taken the edge off as Lynn had suggested, and done the same with the spokes, as this helps when painting.
Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
What did you use to do the spokes and horn plates? I've got some of these polycarbide discs and been reading about patio cleaner but not 100% sure where to begin!

I used a flap wheel in the drill and later went and purchased a bench sander. I haven't used patio cleaner so can't advise on that method. Providing everything is sound and grease free you should be fine.

I'm using Wickes Brick and Mortar cleaner for cleaning up all sorts of parts now!

Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
I second that, used Cementon Brick and Patio Cleaner (thanks ChriX for the hint in your movie), let the spokes soak in the liquid for about 15 min and just had to give it a slight once-over with the angle grinder to get rid of the last mill scale. Just do not forget to rinse with ( a lot of) water afterwards.

Couldn't resist seeing how these bits go together. Will be soaking each plate in the patio cleaner as what you see is the result of half an hour with a polycarbide disc and guessing it should clean up easier after a soak for an hour or two.

Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
Apologies Greg, not had time to send Photos,I used a Flap wheel in a angle grinder to clean up my Plates prior to fitting the rivets.
The spokes I cleaned up with a Flap wheel mounted in a Drill.
Will send photos tomorrow of my progress.
regards
Steve H

Re: 'The boys' 4" Burrell Roller build
No need to soak them for a hour or two, left mine in for 15 min, the hornplates did not touch the bottom of the bassin i put them in, with small movement you will see the mill scale just being washed off in flakes. Important is a good rinsing of the parts with a lot of water afterwards to wash off the acid.
Of course safety glasses and gloves are a must, as is a well as a well ventilated area ( i did mine in the drive) and be prepared that the pair of pliers you use to get the parts out will rust while watching. Old clothes are helpful with Government, too.
