Stunning, it took me 3 years to finish my wheels and I take my hat off to you.  I counted well over 1000 individual lines in the design, excluding the hubs.

Some pics of the work on the Dynamo extension. I'm usintg the Barbeque paint for the smokebox and to cure it used the oven on low but the dynamo extension wouldn't fit so I made a rough box and blowtorch to get the temperature high enough to cure the paint. This was just for the rear section.

My Dyno extension is just BQ Plastikot satin black paint with no curing. Still on after 4 years in steam.

I found three quick coats about 30minutes apart then leave it for 2 days, it's fine then. If the weather is cold & damp it might take a bit longer.

Hi Steve,

Did you find the paint was soft on first firing. I've heard that it's a risk and to watch not to leave fingerprints during the first steaming. Have you found this a problem / risk?

140Kg takes a bit of handling but this is where things start coming together and begin to feel like a traction engine.

Clean off ready for the coat of paint. Picked up the hydraulic platform cheap S/H but what a help and now I'm not sure how I would manage without it.

Not sure how everyone else has found the painting but I have wondered on a number of occasions whether painting before assembly or painting after is the best way and I suspect that there are different views. With the boiler a bit of corrosion protection OK but a lot of other things have to be assembled and re-assembled a number of times usually damaging any paintwork but on the other hand when things are assembled there seems to be no chance to get things painted properly either by brush or spray. I am spending more time painting than anything else at the moment.

Whilst banging on about paint, I have said that I am using Craftmaster and sometimes despite all my surface preparation I don't get a good bond between the pimer and bare metal and it chips off very easily. Speaking to someone who has done work on minature and full size I was recommended T&R Williamson paint, in particular their Spec 81 Anti corrosive Primer which I believe was British Rail specification in the day so I will try some of that. Any thoughts welcome.

Blimey look at the shine on that.....yes I remember lifting mine out the boot of the car, its quite heavy and on the day in question I was on my own.

While I do like the craftmaster paint I have chipped it a few times and had to repaint bits, frustrating but then I need to be more careful.

The gasket alignment on the boiler. The main hole is slightly off for the boiler holes but as the gasket matches the cylinder base perfectly I am planning to leave as is. Don't think that it will make any real difference.

Working on the Hornplates and the bearing housings required a bit of jiggle to get everything aligned in dummy run.

That's looking seriously stunning.  

Be careful when lining the hormplates I've not got mine quite right, and the lining is too low on the horn plates.

If you look at this you will see what I mean. My black is to the same level as yours, but the full size has the black going higher up. I'm hooping no one will notice mine as it's a bit late now to do much about it. Hope you don't mind me saying.

Thanks Rob. I had held off with the lining on the hornplates because I did wonder about the positioning so your comments are appreciated. I think that I will wait until I have the motion guards to try and get the match. If I have to alter the black or blue it shouldn't be too bad but re doing the lining would be a bit of a frustration. As I am sure that you are only too well aware doing the lining before assembly is easier to access but sometimes you have to work with the assembled clutter.

It is a balance for sure, I'll put mind right over next winter when I strip down to fit the cleading.  To do it properly  I'll have to take quite a bit off to get back in to it, I only did the gold on one side so it's not the end of the world. Hoping no one spots it in the meantime.

Seems to be down to the individual, but I don't think many have had to take it off, so check with your boiler inspector if your going to fit yours now just in case. I've left mine off only so I can see what happening and look for any leaks during the first year of streaming.
