So far just using aerosol. But I may use an airbrush for flatter areas like tender and cladding to get a better finish.

Ian, so good to see pictures on the forum of a 2" build, brilliant!!... I wonder how you'll get on with all the tiny fixings in the tender when you get to it!!!!
Please keep pictures coming!

Tony

Been progressing fairly well with the tender, about 2/3 done. I'll post some pictures when it's done. In the mean time here's some photo's of the driving wagon I completed last year.

Or you forgot to put the tow pin in before you opened the regulator!!! Was naming the engine after your wife the only sacrifice you had to make or is there a new kitchen involved too?
Seriously though, good job on the wagon and nice to see some more 2" scale engines on here even though I have a 4" one.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
She has a face at last!
I used Plastikote wood stove paint. Baked in the over at 200c for 1 hour. Really pleased with the finish.
Just one question though. There are 4 holes around the bottom of the chimney which I cannot see any mention of in the instructions. As well as the 4 hex bolts that hold it to the chimney base there were 4 slotless bolts packed with the chimney. Are these meant to go in these holes? Only they look too long.

Looks good Ian, the 4 rivet head bolts do go in the bottom of the chimney.I trimmed them off from the inside once fitted.
I have got the same prob you had with the perch to smokebox rivets being to short, just waiting for Steve to sort out some replacements.
Speak soon, apologies not been in touch

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Steve sent me some BA rivet bolts to replace the metric ones. They fitted perfectly.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Not done much over the last few months. But over the last week got the riveting on the horn plates done and a trial assembly onto the tender. (dismantled now for painting!).
Had a text saying another delivery due today. Hope it's the boiler.

Hi Ian
Wow didnt realise you'd come all the way from Kent to the Bassingstoke rally last weekend, that was some trek
We had a nice little chat if you remember, I was down near the bottom of the field where we discussed your 2" a bit and the reason behind your size choice.
It was good to see you

Thanks, It was good to chat with you. It's the 3rd year I.ve been to the Basingstoke show I really enjoy the way it is so relaxed and informal with people driving their engines around as and when the want to. It was a great day.
It was the boiler that arrived yesterday. It's quite impressive. I couldn't resist 'mocking up' the assemble engine....

Yes it's really exiting to get a glimps of what the finished engine will be like. All dismantled now. I think it will be about 2 months till I get those bits fixed together properly. But it was a good motivation boost to see it together.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Been a while since I've posted any update! I've been fitting the hornplates. There was a slight issue with the alignment tool being too wide to fit the bearing housings. Steve sent a replacement which does fit. As I couldn't find any pictures or description of ho to measure the distance from the cylinder to the tool I though I would post a couple of how I did it.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Just a quick update with yesterdays progress. I've got the honplates and smokebox permanently fixed now. I thought I would work on the crankshaft next as I've still got a bit of painting to finish off on the tender.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Fitted the crank bearings today. Had to do a bit of carefull fetling with a file to get the bearings to fit in their housings. Temporally put the flywheel on so I can spin the crankshaft. Quite pleased with how well it spins. I don't think I'm going to need to use any grinding paste to bed it in.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Just realised it's been over a year and a half since I posted any updates here. Engine now back from STW after sorting out stripped thread on check valve boss. They also sorted out the final f=drive and gear change for me.
I've been fiddling around with trial fitting the water pump. I found that the bypass pipe was too long.
I've never really done any silver soldering before so I decided to give it a go shortening the pipe and soldering a new cone on it. I figured as it's just the bypass pipe I couldn't really go too wrong. After all it hasn't got to take any real heat or pressure. I'm really quite pleased with the result for my first attempt. The solder flowed well round the pipe after just touching it in onw place.
I'll try to get some more progress pictures of the engine up soon.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Nice work Ian
When Silver soldering works its a delight, having stuff clean and a good flux helps a lot. Done bit here and there and really enjoyed it. Can be a pain when it doesnt play ball though.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
Thanks. I think I actually prefer it to soft soldering now.
Just trying to post some photo's using my OneDrive given the issues with photobucket. Let's see if it works!
Got pump fitted. But I'm going to have to take it off again to fit the pipe for the lifter to the globe valve. It's so tight in there there's no way I'll get the union nut on with the pump in the way.
The Gear change and final drive gears all sorted out thanks to Ian at STW.
More general view showing the pipe from pump to check valve fitted.

Re: 2in Burrell 'Sylvia' - Progress so far.
"Sylvia's" had 3 outing this year - Basingstoke, Amberley and last Sunday at the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Railway's end of season gala. Each time I'm learning a bit more how to run her and my driving skills are gradually improving.
Here's a video I posted on the 2" Burrell Owners Facebook group:
