Powder coating?
I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on powder coating an engine? Aside from price, advantages/disadvantages?
**Edit* Sorry, didn't think to search the forums first,,, I need a nap.

Re: Powder coating?
I have done two engines with powder coat. It has advantages and disadvantages, main reason for me is I am lazy, can't be arsed with prep, loath it with a passion in fact. I didnt do this for the building experience I did it to get a super big engine cheap!! For me the coaters are just up the road, assemble and take enverything in dirty and greasy and 72 hours later its black and back!!! The finish isnt bad not like glass like the wheel Hudmut posted or like The Colemans engine, ( he was a body sprayer in another job ) but once you see how much crap comes out of the chimney and motion and how much crap sticks to that you wont know unless you are going to be really anal and forever clean the thing or hardly use it, however that is your own chioce. Of course once its cured you can work on it immeadiately as can be seen from the speed at which I was able to line the motion covers on the last kit!!
Durability could be questionable, all paint can be chipped I dont know if this is more fragile or not than standard paint, perhaps someone else can tell. Cost is difficult to gauge, clearly if you have to buy the compressor, gun, traps etc as well as the paint then it soon mounts up but you do have the gear for the next engine you build (theres usually more than one once you start ) I would guess that my build has cost me £280 approx but that is partly down to three years of occasional batches, if you collected it all and took it in in one hit it may well be cheaper, there was also £100 to wet spray the back wheels as they couldnt be powdered due to the tyres being on already and it was a labour intensive job with primer and top coat.
You also need to consider where you will spray everything, its toxic stuff, collects bugs from the atmosphere, goes over everything else you dont want it to!! If you can find and accomodate an old caravan like Steve Traill then you could have a purpose made spray room but that requires space and an old caravan and cost. Finally colours, you may well find you are limited for choice, I have gone for black for the DCC as its OK for "The President" the previous one was in RAL 3005 which is close to Burrell plum but using RAL charts means anyone can match it. Hope it helps and if you get to a do I am at come and have a look over the engine.
Having just read the location it unlikely we will meet but you never know!!!! Like the dog and the location sounds really cool!!!!

Re: Powder coating?
I'll always be hopeful for a meeting, you just NEVER know for sure till it happens.
It's the shipping rates for the kits that'll be killer.

Re: Powder coating?
I'll check into this. Would have to save a bit up before I could proceed.highpressure wrote:Get them all sent at once,
Unfortunately. Maybe I can start a trend, like putting the STW address on the back of the tender for when I do a rally.highpressure wrote:you cant get this stuff in the US sadly
Looking at the pictures from some of the others, I have no doubt.highpressure wrote:but it'll be worth it!!!

About how long does it take them to reply to an email? I've sent one days ago, but no response.

Re: Powder coating?
A lot of companies have a total shutdown for the Christmas and new year period. Traditionally for maintenance but now for the case of everyone else is shut so hard to get anything done.

Looks sharp. Wish I wasn't half way around the world, not many Burrell's around these parts.

Hi NiteWolf,

Re: Powder coating?
Wish I could get one in 6 inch scale. I'm 6'4", and need a little more leg room.
A showman would be perfect tho, but I would have to do mine in blue.
