New Build Burrell

Received my first three kits for 4" Ag. Burrell yesterday.
First question of many I expect - what is the best way of degreasing the tender metalwork? as they are very oily.

Paint Prep - Panel pre-wipe works well.

Soap suds and elbow grease also works.

I used Gunk painted it on left it to drain then washed using a hosepipe need to dry it well or it will rust pretty quickly. Normally used to degrease car engines etc.

I hit all fresh steel with standard thinners then 80 grift with a DA sander to key the steel then a good wipe down with the thinners once more before paint. Cellulose thinners has a lot more bit and so is good for getting that dirt of first time round dont use it once there is paint on there as you will wipeing that off to use per-wipe after you have paint on the job and don't forget to wipe it on with one clothe and of with another

One good tip to is don't use paper towels or rags there full of dust that won't show until you paint get a box of proper body shop wipes tack rags are to pick bits up not remove every thing that is left from your prep work small costs now are nothing over the time in takes to sort out up setting paint work.

I use Swarfega Jizer Degreaser, comes in a 5litre tin for about £20. This is an emulsifiable degreaser, widely used in industry and the automotive trade. It will not stain or damage most plastics, synthetic rubbers or paints and it rinses off with water. One I use also has a rust inhibitor built in (if that’s the right term). Also seems to remove any loose scale with ease.

I find it works great. I transfer to a small spray bottle, spray the parts and give them the once over with an old paint brush before running under cold water. Works a treat and lad lasted me ages as you dont use much.

My trick.......get someone else with small fingers to do it for me, if all else fails use a fibreglass pencil (i think thats what it is anyway)

You got it them fibreglass brushes are a god send.
