Parking brake

A word of caution: everyone knows now about the need for a return
spring to let this brake fully off, but is everyone aware this is
because of its very strong self-servo make-up ?
This self-servo action will make it a wonderful brake when facing
forward downhill, but totally untrustworthy vice-versa. I have parked
mine on a gentle slope the 'wrong way round', and been surprised how
easy it is to push it backwards with the brake well on.

If you replace the stainless steel cable with 1/8" 7 by 7 you don't need the return spring. I had the same problem of the brake cabling not releasing the brake. I found that the cable used is too large in dia. and binds against the pulley and mount which causes friction on both pulleys. The tension on the brake band is all that is need to release the brake. I also used a turnbuckle on the end of the cable at the top end to made adjusting much easier. As the brake wears out it easy to adjust.
